My Story

My name is Laura Whitelaw, owner of OverwhelmToEmpowerment.com, a self-hosted Wordpress website I built myself.   

When I think back to my high school days, it’s interesting to remember that we only had one computer for the entire student population.  This was before the internet was a thing and computers were just beginning to infiltrate our daily lives.  

Fast forward a few years and along came the internet. I was an early adopter among my friends.  I was surfing the net at least a few years before most people I knew at that time.  I was fascinated by it and the potential it offered to entrepreneurial minded people like myself.

But back then, if you wanted a website, you had to have coding experience.  So eventually I started my first business which was a resume writing business and I hired a webmaster to build a website for me.  It was around 2002 and I paid $2000 for my first website and made quite a bit of money from that website!  

As time went on however, I needed content updates time and it cost me $100 a pop, even for changing just one sentence.  It was very frustrating and so I was reluctant to request any updates from my webmaster and allowed my website to get stale.  Then, my enthusiasm about my website and my business began to decline.

It was around this time that I started hearing about Wordpress websites being all the rage and took an online course to learn how to build one from scratch.  What a blessing that has been.  It’s given me a lot more freedom because NOW I can easily change anything on my website by myself without the time and expense associated with relying on a webmaster.  
Further, I have built and marketed many a website for clients which has brought additional income for me while helping my clients build their own profitable businesses.

So when I reflect on my high school days and my lack of technical expertise when I started, I have to give myself a pat on the back for learning how to build self-hosted  Wordpress websites.  I want you to know, that if I can learn how, then you can too!

Q & A:

Q:  Can someone who is not in the coaching profession take this course?

A:  Absolutely, this course will help you even if you are a blogger, energy practitioner or healer, photographer, author, tarot card reader, yoga teacher, etc.  If you want to take your business online, this will give you the foundation.  However, this course will not teach you how to set up an ecommerce store.

Q:  I'm not a techie person, can I do this?

A:  Yes, I didn't used to consider myself a techie person either when I started building websites but I persisted due to my entrepreneurial nature and it was a skill I wanted to learn.  

This course is a look over my shoulder as you watch me build one of my client's websites.  You can follow along and pause the video any time you like to complete each task.

Q.  What about building my website on Wix, Weebly, Squarespace of Wordpress.com?

A.  The problem with these website builders mentioned above is they are limited in terms of the functionality and options for customization.  Chances are that as you grow your business, you will want it to be scalable so that you can maximize your earning potential and your ability to serve your market.  With self hosted Wordpress website you have far more control and your website can grow with you as your business grows.  In addition, leaders in the industry do NOT use Wix, Weebly, Squarespace...they use self hosted wordpress.  So if your intention is to go BIG with your business, self hosted wordpress is the way to go.  It all comes down to whether your business is a hobby or not.  Wix, Weebly, Squarespace is perfect for the hobbyist.
